Hi Martha! You may want to try something more akin to a Paleolithic diet. It features a restriction on dairy, fatty means and vegetable oils. I’ve also heard of people combining the two diets to fit their needs.
Within just a couple days of cutting out carbs and raising fats, ketone concentrations in the blood rise and the brain will begin using them for energy preferentially. This initial keto-adaptation process usually takes about four weeks to complete, at which point you’ll reach peak fat-burning adaptations.
Monosodium glutamate (MSG) is a flavor-enhancing chemical, meaning that it makes food taste better than it actually is. The way it works is it enlarges your taste buds to enhance the perception of the savory taste. It’s in many, many foods at the grocery store and fast-food restaurants, including Chinese restaurants.

Saturated fat does not clog the arteries: coronary heart disease is a chronic inflammatory condition, the risk of which can be effectively reduced from healthy lifestyle interventions — British Journal of Sports Medicine
Your body is used to the simple routine of breaking down carbohydrates and using them as energy. Over time the body has built up an arsenal of enzymes ready for this process and only has a few enzymes for dealing with fats – mostly to store them.
No matter what your diet has been to this point, keto will be a big change. If you’re coming from a standard American diet (SAD) background, your carbs will go way down, protein may either go up or down, and fat will go way up. If you’re coming from a bodybuilding-style diet, your fat intake will jump to alarming levels, and your protein will likely drop significantly.

Take a 2 – 3 cups of lettuce, crumble in some bacon and dice a medium tomato. Mix that with two or three tablespoons of mayo, and toss after adding some splashes of hot sauce. Delicious, filling, full of fiber and healthy fats, and absolutely easy. I know the mayo sounds weird as a dressing, but trust us; it’s amazing! Add in some avocado chunks to boost potassium too!
Yes. Ketchup, barbecue sauce, and Asian sauces like duck sauce and sweet-and-sour sauce are loaded with sugar. Eating sugar with protein greatly spikes insulin which is exactly what you’re trying to avoid. Mustard is okay. Mayonnaise is also okay if it isn’t made with soy.
Most of the cravings that we get are caused by sugar. Sugar, at the end of the day, is an industry that’s run on addiction. There have been numerous studies showing that sugar stimulates the reward centers of the brain.
Option 3: Spicy guacamole with raw zucchini slices. The foods you choose between meals should still be keto-friendly and may even mimic an upcoming dinner, just in a smaller portion size, says Stefanski. “Since carbs are minimal, it’s important to spend your carbs on high-nutrient foods like vegetables.”
The only real time where ketosis can give performance loss is in exercises that need an explosive action. If you need a little boost in your performance during these, you can “carb-up” by eating 25-50g of carbs about 30 minutes before you train.
Implementing the diet can present difficulties for caregivers and the patient due to the time commitment involved in measuring and planning meals. Since any unplanned eating can potentially break the nutritional balance required, some people find the discipline needed to maintain the diet challenging and unpleasant. Some people terminate the diet or switch to a less demanding diet, like the modified Atkins diet (MAD) or the low-glycaemic index treatment (LGIT) diet, because they find the difficulties too great.[41]
I don’t see many posts from people, women especially, who start their keto journeys at high weights like mine. I hope that if there are any lurkers out there like me who can relate to my struggles and experiences, they can see this as proof and, if I’m lucky, inspiration that YES YOU CAN DO THIS! THIS IS POSSIBLE!

Not a fan of avocados? Try using avocado oil. Although you won’t get all of the vitamins and minerals that you would by eating a full avocado, its oil contains mostly monounsaturated fat. This unsaturated fatty acid helps improve cholesterol levels and is so stable that it can be heated to about 500 degrees Fahrenheit without becoming rancid, which makes it a great cooking oil.
Keto flu is a very common experience for new ketoers, but it often goes away after just a few days – and there are ways to minimize or even eliminate it. When transitioning to keto, you may feel some slight discomfort including fatigue, headache, nausea, cramps, etc.
You’re probably familiar with the saying, “A house is only as strong as its foundation.” Well, with the federal government’s food pyramid, the foundation is a recipe for metabolic diseases. Grains and cereals are culpable in the nation’s diabesity epidemic.
You can measure if you’re in ketosis via urine or blood strips, though it’s not really worth it. The urine strips are considered pretty inaccurate (they more answer the question “Am I in ketosis?”), and the blood strips are expensive (up to $5 per strip). When searching for sweeteners, try to go after liquid versions as they don’t have added binders (such as maltodextrin and dextrose). These are commonly found in blends like Splenda and can add up in carbs very, very quickly. For keto, you want to try to stick with lower glycemic index sweeteners.
Diet soda. You can drink diet soda, but it’s recommended to cut it out completely. Some people report being knocked out of ketosis after a large consumption of artificial sweeteners. Studies also show a link between sugar cravings and artificial sweeteners – cutting the soda out will help curb your cravings.
Leafy greens have fewer carbohydrates than other forms of produce, a serious plus for those following the ketogenic diet. Spinach is also rich in iron, potassium, and fiber, all of which have major health benefits.
Keto bombs are snacks that ketogenic dieters love because they’re healthy, delicious cheat foods that are high in fat, but virtually devoid of carbs and protein. I have a lot of videos on how to make keto bombs, but you don’t have to have them with each meal. The goals would be to have one a day. Dumping a lot of butter or coconut oil into your coffee may not work for you. Some people can digest it, and some people can’t.
Note: Many people experience the Keto Flu when transitioning to keto due to dehydration and lack of electrolytes. Make sure that you replenish your electrolytes and drink plenty of fluids. An easy way to do this is by drinking bone broth or sports drinks sweetened with sucralose or stevia.
To get the most health benefits from your meat, it is best to have 100% grass-fed pasture-raised red meat and pasture-raised poultry. Meat from animals that are raised in this way has been found to have healthier ratios of omega 3 to omega 6 fats and contain more antioxidants than 100% grain-fed animals.
As mentioned above, the keto diet has also been used effectively for preventing seizures in epileptic patients, especially those who don’t respond well to medication. While it’s not entirely clear how this process works, research suggests removing carbs and mimicking the effect of starvation may block the neuron channels that lead to the ‘electrical storm in the brain’ that results in a seizure (15).
Ketosis is a state of physical being and energy utilization when the body is running on ketones instead of glucose. Ketones are a clean fuel the body and brain absolutely loves. Ketones are an alternative fuel for the body that is not sugar or glucose. Running on ketones is like running a car on electricity rather than diesel fuel. Ketones are a cleaner fuel source – an alternative fuel source that gives a person way more energy than glucose. Even professional athletes can outrun and outperform any other athlete on ketosis than carb loading. By lowering your insulin, your sugars and refined carbohydrates, way down there close to zero to 5% of your daily calories or lower, you will burn fat as opposed to glucose for diet purposes or because you want to run on this clean fuel that many people find can help them perform better in all areas of life, mentally and physically. When you’re running on glucose and insulin is spiked, you’re not dipping down into your fat stores for energy. You’re burning up your muscles, not fat. When you’re in ketosis, you’re no longer spiking your blood sugar and you begin running on your own fat for fuel, which is idea for losing weight—the right kind of weight—fat.
And your medical degree came from where exactly. If it is possible to be allergic to sun light or water (both are well documented allergies that kill people) there is no reason why an allergy to chlorophyll is not possible. It is chlorophyll that makes plants green.
Pass the guac! Avocados are a dream ketogenic food, thanks to their high-fat content and lack of sugar and carbohydrates. Just avoid pairing this fatty fruit with chips or toast in order to adhere to ketogenic principles—instead, enjoy it as a topping to your salad, baked with an egg inside, or as a side to your morning bacon and eggs.
I started Keto 2 days ago. I have figured my Keto Macros to 1102 cal – 86g fat – cho 20 g net. and Prot 63 g ……….. My problem is “how do I count my keto good foods values? I ate a good bacon, 2egg to equal my Macro #s?
Actually, YES—ketchup, BBQ sauce, Asian sauces like duck sauce and sweet and sour sauce are LOADED with sugar and eating sugar with protein greatly spikes INSULIN—exactly what you don’t want to do. Mustard doesn’t. So choose fattier salad dressings like ranch. I like Paul Newman’s line of salad dressings as they contain almost no sugar. Start looking at sugar grams on EVERYTHING. Try to stick around one or less. Two max and only once a day.
A: The short answer is yes. Aside from the broad guidelines stated above, there are no real “rules” so long as you’re low carb, moderate protein and getting the rest of your calories from fat. If it fits within your macros, then you’re fine.
