Option 1: Spinach, mushroom, and feta omelet with keto coffee (coffee with adding fat such as MCT oil, butter, or bone broth protein). “This breakfast is a good source of protein and healthy fats that will keep you feeling full to curb midmorning cravings,” says Dr. Axe.
Fully keto: cocoa powder, coconut aminos, fatty salad dressings, ketchup (no sugar added), mayo, miso, mustard, nutritional yeast, pure powdered spices, soy sauce, tomato sauce (no sugar added), vinegars
Achieving ketosis is a pretty straightforward, but it can seem complicated and confusing with all of the information out there. Here’s the bottom line on what you need to do, ordered in levels of importance:
If you want to slam a protein shake post-workout, that’s probably fine as long as you’ve got room for it in your macros. But shoot for one that is very low—like, zero—in carbohydrates. If you struggle to fit fat in during the day, toss a tablespoon of olive oil in with your shake. You won’t taste it, and it gives a quick 13-14 grams of fat.
There are other ways of telling you’re in ketosis, though – look for changes in your mood and alertness, as well as a stronger smell in your breath and urine. Many people also report better sleep and decreased appetite when they’re in ketosis.
I’m not here to sell you on nutritional ketosis or explain what it is or the big-picture benefits it can provide. That’s the domain of other articles. With the help of Myoplex athlete and longtime keto-adapted athlete Jason Wittrock, I’m here to provide you with your best induction experience.

You might want to consider using a calprie counter/tool to help you determine the amount of calories, fat, protein, etc in food. I find MY Fitness Pal to be eztremely useful. You put in the type of food and it calculates all those tricky numbers for you. You can even see the macros (percentages) or set your own.it might seem a bit confusing at first but you’ll get the hang of it. Best of luck!
Ketosis transforms your body into a fat-burning machine, burning fat (not carbs) for fuel. Specifically, the liver converts fatty acids in your body into ketone bodies, or ketones. This becomes your body’s new energy source. When you increase your fat intake, your body responds by becoming “keto-adaptive,” or more efficient at burning fat.
In conclusion, the role of ketogenic diets in epilepsy treatment is well established and we are confident that this is also the case for weight loss, cardiovascular disease and T2D. The recent research reviewed here demonstrate improvements in many risk factors, such as weight, saturated fats, inflammation and other biomarkers, as a consequence of consuming well-formulated low-carbohydrate diets, and this work should encourage continued close examination of their therapeutic value (Figure 1).
The first modern study of fasting as a treatment for epilepsy was in France in 1911.[12] Twenty epilepsy patients of all ages were “detoxified” by consuming a low-calorie vegetarian diet, combined with periods of fasting and purging. Two benefited enormously, but most failed to maintain compliance with the imposed restrictions. The diet improved the patients’ mental capabilities, in contrast to their medication, potassium bromide, which dulled the mind.[13]
The ketogenic diet has being studied for potential therapeutic use in various neurological disorders other than epilepsy: Alzheimer’s disease (AD), amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), autism, headache, neurotrauma, pain, Parkinson’s disease (PD) and sleep disorders.[6]
Blackberries have been around for hundreds of thousands of years. Romans and Greeks even used them to treat illnesses and gout. They’ve been cooked and served in a wide variety of dishes as well. While they are delicious, they also have some surprising health benefits.
The exact amount you should eat to get into ketosis will differ from person to person. Your body fat percentage, how much weight you want to lose, as well as how much exercise you do all make a difference. So we suggest you use our Keto Calculator to figure out your exact macros (how many calories of fat, protein, and carbohydrates to eat).
Because the ketogenic diet alters the body’s metabolism, it is a first-line therapy in children with certain congenital metabolic diseases such as pyruvate dehydrogenase (E1) deficiency and glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome[34], which prevent the body from using carbohydrates as fuel, leading to a dependency on ketone bodies. The ketogenic diet is beneficial in treating the seizures and some other symptoms in these diseases and is an absolute indication.[35] On the other hand, it is absolutely contraindicated in the treatment of other diseases such as pyruvate carboxylase deficiency, porphyria and other rare genetic disorders of fat metabolism.[9] A person with a disorder of fatty acid oxidation is unable to metabolise fatty acids, which replace carbohydrates as the major energy source on the diet. On the ketogenic diet, their body would consume its own protein stores for fuel, leading to ketoacidosis, and eventually coma and death.[36]
Medicine. Cold medications, cough syrups, and flu remedies often contain lots of sugar. Some of the generic over the counter cough medicines contain 20g of carbs per serving, so be very careful when sick. There are usually sugar-free or diabetic alternatives.
When in the hospital, glucose levels are checked several times daily and the patient is monitored for signs of symptomatic ketosis (which can be treated with a small quantity of orange juice). Lack of energy and lethargy are common but disappear within two weeks.[17] The parents attend classes over the first three full days, which cover nutrition, managing the diet, preparing meals, avoiding sugar and handling illness.[18] The level of parental education and commitment required is higher than with medication.[43]
Bacon and eggs won’t provide you with the plant compounds that may help prevent disease. Also recommended on the keto foods list in the veggie department: cauliflower, cabbage, broccoli, zucchini, radish and more. Want a chart with low net carb veggies? Take a look at this list of keto friendly vegetables.
Polyunsaturated Fats. Know the difference. Naturally occurring polyunsaturated fats in animal protein and fatty fish are great for you, and you should eat these. Processed polyunsaturated fats in “heart healthy” margarine spreads are bad for you.
I will be trying this for my husband! I have gallbladder issues, and can’t eat fats other than coconut, olive, salmon, avocado, eggs, flax, lean poultry, and sparingly tree nuts. Dairy and fatty meats and all vegetable oils are out. Is there a way to make this work for me? I really don’t want to prepare 2 meals at every meal…
Fruit and berries. Most fruits are not allowed to be consumed due to the high sugar content. Many people still eat berries, but you have to control your portioning with these. Be careful blueberries and cranberries as they add up in carbohydrates fast.
Note: Absolut and Ciroc both cite that their flavored vodka does not contain carbs. Your experience may vary, so keep a close eye on your blood sugar levels if you choose to consume one of their flavored vodkas.
Drink water. Try to drink a gallon of water a day. Make sure that you’re hydrating and staying consistent with the amount of water you drink. It not only helps regulate many vital bodily functions, but it also helps control hunger levels.
At only 4g net carbs per 100g, it’s a great fruit to keep in your rotation and use when you need a sweet treat. Many people don’t know about this fruit but it has a good amount of fiber for the size and high amounts of vitamin C. It also has plant compounds in it which show to prevent fat cell formation and reduce fatty liver and cholesterol in animal studies.
First, don’t mistake a ketogenic diet (or the upgraded Bulletproof Diet) for the Atkins Diet. Whereas the Atkins Diet is extremely high in protein, a keto diet contains moderate amounts of protein. On a keto diet, large amounts of protein can turn into glucose in a process called gluconeogenesis, thus taking you out of ketosis. That’s why fatty cuts of meat are better than, say, chicken breast, which is high in protein and low in fat. Vast amounts of protein also tax the liver and lead to inflammation. By contrast, a ketogenic diet is anti-inflammatory; burning fat for fuel creates far less inflammation than burning sugar does[2], and ketones themselves turn off inflammatory pathways[3]. Because of this, ketogenic diets may in fact help prevent chronic diseases that are caused by inflammation. (Fun fact: The ketogenic diet is used to keep epileptic patients from having seizures.)

The suggested intake at first is around 20. To remain in ketosis you must not consume more than 50 but this varies for each person. You can gradually increase the amount of carbs from 20 to 50 to best suite your body’s metabolism
Everyone loves lettuce tacos. They’re very straightforward, nearly impossible to get wrong, and Keto friendly. I’m even happy to admit that I prefer them over regular tacos. But in spite of the pros of the humble lettuce taco, it still comes with the cons of a regular taco: being very messy. Lets fix that.
The possible beneficial effects of ketogenic diets on mitochondrial activity described above has also been proposed to explain the improved scores on a standard gravity scale of Parkinson’ disease exhibited by some patients.91 In addition, the typical mitochondrial respiratory chain damage that occurs in animal models of Parkinson’s disease was reduced by a ketogenic diet;89 however, the real utility of this diet remains largely speculative and uncertain.
When I need a snack between meals, I go for a piece of dark chocolate (85-85-90% cacao), or half an avocado sprinkled with salt and pepper, or Healthy Homemade Beef Jerky or fat bombs: ketodietapp.com/Blog/Filter. With fat bombs you need to be careful as they are calorie dense and easy to overeat.
Now that you’ve cleaned out everything you don’t need, it’s time to restock your pantry and fridge with delicious and wholesome, keto-friendly foods that will help you lose weight, become healthier, and feel amazing!
Keep an eye on your intake for nut or seed based foods, as they can be quite high in inflammatory omega 6’s. These include items like almonds, walnuts, pine nuts, sunflower oil and corn oil. Eating fatty fish and animal meat, keeping snacking to a minimum, and not over-indulging in dessert items that are dense in almond flour is usually enough to keep your omega’s at normal ranges.
Make things yourself. While it’s extremely convenient to buy most things pre-made or pre-cooked, it always adds to the price per pound on items. Try prepping veggies ahead of time instead of buying pre-cut ones. Try making your stew meat from a chuck roast. Or, simply try to make your mayo and salad dressings at home. The simplest of things can work to cut down on your overall grocery shopping.
In many developing countries, the ketogenic diet is expensive because dairy fats and meat are more expensive than grain, fruit and vegetables. The modified Atkins diet has been proposed as a lower-cost alternative for those countries; the slightly more expensive food bill can be offset by a reduction in pharmaceutical costs if the diet is successful. The modified Atkins diet is less complex to explain and prepare and requires less support from a dietitian.[54]
All the rage now, fat coffee is kind of exactly what it sounds like. Taking a good quality coffee, and blending it with 2 tbsp of grassfed butter, 1-2 tbsp of coconut oil, and stevia or whatever other zero-calorie sweetener and flavors you like. This coffee greatly boosts energy and suppresses hunger, and it’s frothy and delicious!
Many people enjoy keeping themselves accountable by creating challenges for themselves. We use a 32 oz. water bottle and put four hair ties around it. Each time we finish a bottle, we take away a hair tie. Keep drinking until there’s no more!
Note: Always be careful about fruit added into prepared items. Fruit juice, canned fruits, and fruit snacks tend to have added sugar and are not considered keto friendly. Always check food labels before purchasing items.
9) Tropical fruit (pineapple, mango, banana, papaya, etc.) and some high-carb fruit (tangerine, grapes, etc.) Also avoid fruit juices (yes, even 100% fresh juices!) – better to drink smoothies if any, but either way very limited. Juices are just like sugary water, but smoothies have fiber, which is at least more sating. This also includes dried fruit (dates, raisins, etc.) if eaten in large quantities.
Even the fats in these meats are beneficial for health. One study in older women found that consuming a diet high in fatty meat led to HDL cholesterol levels that were 8% higher than on a low-fat, high-carb diet. This study also provides us with a deeper understanding of why the ketogenic diet has been found to improve cholesterol levels.
Implementing the diet can present difficulties for caregivers and the patient due to the time commitment involved in measuring and planning meals. Since any unplanned eating can potentially break the nutritional balance required, some people find the discipline needed to maintain the diet challenging and unpleasant. Some people terminate the diet or switch to a less demanding diet, like the modified Atkins diet (MAD) or the low-glycaemic index treatment (LGIT) diet, because they find the difficulties too great.[41]
