Yes, olives are fruits. And extra virgin olive oil (if you can get the first pressing of the olives, that’s the best!) is a healthy fruit juice! Avocados are sort of like the fish of the fruit world. They contain omega 3 fatty acids, as does salmon and other cold-water oily fish that are healthy for your heart and best keto foods.
I hear this question a lot. The general answer is no. If you avoid vegetables which are high in starch and sugar like corn, beets and carrots or carrot juice which is packed with sugar, you don’t have to worry about the vegetable family.
Well, that’s because our bodies are designed to have 2 ways to getting energy. It can burn glucose if you’re eating lots of carbohydrate daily. Or if it runs out or is low on glucose (e.g., if you eat a keto diet), then your body will start burning more fat.

For breakfast, you want to do something that’s quick, easy, tasty, and of course – gives you leftovers. I suggest starting day 1 on a weekend. This way, you can make something that will last you for the entire week. The first week is all about simplicity. Nobody wants to be making breakfast before work, and we’re not going to be doing that either!
Eat moderately: artichoke, bamboo shoots, beetroot, bell pepper, bitter melon, brussel sprouts, cabbage, carrot, cauliflower, celery root, eggplant, fennel, garlic, green beans, jicama, kombu, leeks, nori, okra, olives, onion, parsley root, parsnip, peppers, pumpkin, rhubarb, rutabaga, sugar snap peas, sweet potato, tomatillo, tomato, turnip, water chestnuts, wax beans, winter squash
Leafy greens have fewer carbohydrates than other forms of produce, a serious plus for those following the ketogenic diet. Spinach is also rich in iron, potassium, and fiber, all of which have major health benefits.
Yams and potatoes (white, red, sweet, etc.) — sweet potatoes have the least carbs, about 10 net grams per 1/2 potato; Yams and white potatoes can have much more, about 13–25 net grams per 1/2 potato/yam cooked
If at any point during the day you begin to feel hungry, make sure to have some ketofriendly snacks on hand. You shouldn’t be hungry between meals, but sometimes in the beginning of your ketogenic diet, you need some time to adjust. These keto-friendly snacks are here to help!
Option 2: Spread some cream cheese between two cucumber slices. “Cucumber is a great low-carb veggie that works well combined with high-fat cream cheese for a satisfying, keto-friendly snack,” says Dr. Axe.
I tried to scale the recipes as best as I could in this meal plan, but not every recipe will be scaled, and some recipes will give leftovers. Make sure you look a few days ahead in the meal plan, as some leftovers are used. Freeze things if you have too much leftovers. You can always re-use this food later on!
The first signs of ketosis are known as the “keto flu” where headaches, brain fogginess, fatigue, and the like can really rile your body up. Make sure that you’re drinking plenty of waterand eating plenty of salt. The ketogenic diet is a natural diuretic and you’ll be peeing more than normal. Take into account that you’re peeing out electrolytes, and you can guess that you’ll be having a thumping headache in no time. Keeping your salt intake and water intake high enough is very important, allowing your body to re-hydrate and re-supply your electrolytes. Doing this will help with the headaches, if not get rid of them completely.
In yet another study, the ketogenic group lost 24.4 lbs (11.1 kg), compared to 15.2 lbs (6.9 kg) in the higher-carb group. This is an important benefit when considering the link between weight and type 2 diabetes (2, 31).
However, no land mammal can compete with the amount of anti-inflammatory omega 3s that you’ll get from fish and shellfish. Salmon, sardines, mackerel and other fatty fish are the highest in omega-3 fats, which is why many studies have found frequent fish intake to be associated with improved mental health and decreased risk of disease.
Typically you want to stay away from any brands that use filler ingredients like maltodextrin and dextrose, or high glycemic sweeteners like maltitol. Many low-carb products that claim low net carbs usually use these sugar alcohols. Many candies that are “sugar-free” also use these sweeteners. Avoid them where possible. These specific sweeteners respond in our body in a similar way sugar does.
I am a vegetarian. How can I do a ketogenic diet? I have been avoiding all carbohydrates for about 2 wks–no processed food, no bread, pasta, potatoes, rice, etc. I lost about 2 lbs almost immediately, then no more weight loss.
A good quality meatloaf needs meat and a binder, and fortunately on keto, we’ve got great options for both. Using chopped mushrooms and onions as a binder instead of bread crumbs adds flavor and nutrients, and keeps carbs down. Add a veggie side and you’re all set! Get the recipe and instructions
For a long time, ketones were believed to be toxic. This is only because in a severe diabetes state when a person has run out of insulin, the body can generate a tremendous amount of ketones and dramatically increase its acidity. This is called ketoacidosis. However, this is rare and only occurs in a severe diabetic state and in diabetes type 1.2
For example; if you get into ketosis and release your stored fat in your fat cells, there is a chance you could end up with a fatty liver since all these fat flowing out has to come out through the liver.  The way to prevent this is to consume larger quantities of vegetables or salad as a way of keeping your liver flushed of fat. A recent study, in fact, found that the ketogenic diet reduced fat on the liver, inflammation, and fibrosis.6
It is possible to consume too much protein on the ketogenic diet. While low carb diets call for a higher protein intake, those on the standard ketogenic diet eat only a moderate amount of protein. Why? Because your body can actually break down protein for glucose (known as gluconeogenesis), thus preventing the body from reaching full ketosis.
While the ketogenic diet has become popular for weight loss, studies have also shown numerous other health benefits of following a keto diet. For example, studies have shown it may help reverse type 2 diabetes and reduce symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease, depression, and autism (2)(3). In fact, the keto diet was first used in the 1920s not as a weight loss diet, but a natural treatment to prevent seizures in epilepsy patients (4).
Ketogenic diets often create a significant loss of water during the first phases. This is because carbs are converted to glycogen in your body, which is stored in water within the muscles and liver. As you deplete stored glycogen, your body flushes this water out. This is a huge part of the initial weight loss during the first few weeks of ketosis. While rapid fat loss does occur at first, a lot of water weight is often dropped as well, but this is a great encouragement as it often results in both weight loss and less bloating, allowing clothes to fit better.

The less frequent the meals, the more protein you will need per meal. What happens as you eat fewer meals is that your body will compensate. That is, you’ll lose less protein and become more efficient at using it. If you consume two meals per day, the average protein per meal could be 7 to 8 ounces. If you have  one meal per day, the total daily protein amount could be 9 ounces.
If you’d like to find the healthiest eggs possible, seek out egg farmers that give their chickens access to pasture — a place where they can eat plenty of insects and soak up the sun. Studies have found that chickens raised in this way tend to lay eggs that are filled with more omega 3s, vitamins, and minerals.
By now, you should have a pretty good idea of what to eat on a ketogenic diet. Make sure that you read and re-read through the list of acceptable foods to build a mental image around what type of meals you will want to eat.
You can find your own electrolyte powder or use mine. Mine contains 1,000 mg of potassium per serving, as well as all other minerals and trace minerals—but without the maltodextrin (or sugar) that normally comes with most electrolyte powders.
