Speaking of butter, that’s a winner on the ketogenic diet shopping list. Only if it’s grass-fed, though. But I’m getting ahead of myself here. I’ll share plenty of what I consider the best low carb foods for both health and weight loss.
Keep in mind, however, that some of the fats in olive oil can become rancid when exposed to temperatures higher than 375 degrees Fahrenheit. For this reason, it is best to cook with it at low temperatures or eat it in its raw form. Try putting it on your salads and vegetables to add some healthy fats your meal and increase the absorption of fat-soluble vitamins from those veggies.
Drinking alcohol slows ketone production. There are some legitimate concerns when it comes to consuming alcohol on a ketogenic diet. Alcohol slows fat burning and ketone production. Drinks to avoid include:
When trying to shift from a high carb diet to a ketogenic diet, cravings can definitely get strong. It’s always best to try to clean house before you start so that you don’t have food around you that can lead to cravings. We recommend that when switching to keto, you restrict using sweeteners completely for the first 30 days. It normally leads to breaking sugar addiction and ultimately not having cravings.
Keep in mind that you want a good balance of omega-3s and omega-6s, which are essential fatty acids you must get from your diet and are important for many things, including proper nerve and brain function and reducing the risk for heart disease, Alzheimer’s disease, type 2 diabetes, and brain function decline with old age.

Participants in the keto group increased their HDL cholesterol on average +5.6 mg/dL compared to those in the low-glycemic index group who had no increases in HDL cholesterol. in the LCKD vs. 0 mg/dL in the LGID
In this guide the only form of pure fat we use is butter. If possible, coconut oil would really be a nice upgrade. We couldn’t fit coconut oil into our $5 a day keto on a budget meal plan, but it’s cheap if you buy in bulk. Another good substitution would be olive oil or coconut oil and vinegar instead of the premade salad dressing. Most cheap premade dressings will use oils that are frowned upon on keto like canola or vegetable oil.
Berries are well known for their antioxidants which may protect from free radical damage and help fight inflammation. There have even been studies linking berries to lower cholesterol levels and a reduction in heart disease. Raspberries, in particular, have a high polyphenol content, which can help reduce blood pressure and preventing platelet buildup in the arteries.
Initially you may be surprised that on keto diets you eat less frequently. That’s because the fats are pretty satisfying. But as you normalize and adjust into a ketogenic state, that may change and your appetite may increase. That’s fine and completely normal. Use whatever diet you decide to follow as a starting point – it should be “written in pencil” so that you can make changes along the way. Consider adding an extra meal, marginally increasing the size of the meals or just adding a shake between meals. It’s up to you – just listen to your body. For example for me, I added a low-carb “green powder” shake supplement to my regimen along with either flax seed oil or some nuts in order to satisfy my hunger.
While not a fruit, honey is often referred to as a natural, healthy sweetener. Honey is one of the most nutritionally dense sweeteners but is packed full of fructose and, like the other “healthy” sweeteners to avoid on keto, lead to negative health effects. Most processed honey also has added sugars and is usually pasteurized, losing most of the nutritional benefits it has.
Some of the food, for example the Not Your Caveman’s Chili, is used in the first week and then again in the last week. You could use the same batch you cook in the first, which not only saves you energy and time, but also saves money. Just freeze it and bring it out to defrost as needed.
Last, but certainly not least, is sticking to the diet! Ketosis is a process that happens in your body. You can’t just have “that one” cheat meal. If you do, it can hamper progress for up to a week before your body is back in ketosis and normally functioning again.
Just about all meats are keto! If it used to cluck, moo, or oink… you can eat it! Red meat, poultry, pork, and seafood are all great for a ketogenic diet. The organ meats of each are fantastic as well.
Bear with me here, because I was skeptical at first, too, but for a quick, delicious meal, you can’t go wrong here. Conversely, you could use cottage cheese and blueberries, if walnuts and hot sauce aren’t your thing.

To decrease calories, you will have to think about what you need. Most likely, you will need less protein as well. So, keep in mind the portions of sizes of meals. Decrease them as you need to, or see fit.
“Low-carb” doesn’t always mean keto-approved. As a rule of thumb, try to stick to whole food-based snacks as much as possible, preferably homemade. Remember, food is supposed to go bad. Preservatives and fake ingredients have not been in the human diet until recently, and we are not well equipped to handle them. The body’s response is usually to create inflammation in response to food-like ingredients that it deems as “foreign.”
Note: Many people experience the Keto Flu when transitioning to keto due to dehydration and lack of electrolytes. Make sure that you replenish your electrolytes and drink plenty of fluids. An easy way to do this is by drinking bone broth or sports drinks sweetened with sucralose or stevia.
Spinach, kale, chard, parsley and any other green veggie that goes well in a green drink are high in antioxidants. You don’t want to avoid these super healthy veggies just for the sake of staying in ketosis.
For patients who benefit, half achieve a seizure reduction within five days (if the diet starts with an initial fast of one to two days), three-quarters achieve a reduction within two weeks, and 90% achieve a reduction within 23 days. If the diet does not begin with a fast, the time for half of the patients to achieve an improvement is longer (two weeks) but the long-term seizure reduction rates are unaffected. Parents are encouraged to persist with the diet for at least three months before any final consideration is made regarding efficacy.
Note: If you are on a ketogenic diet for weight loss, you may want to consider avoiding alcohol altogether. While you can consume low-carb alcohol and stay in ketosis, the ethyl will be burned by the body in preference of all other nutrients consumed. In other words, alcohol will slow down the fat loss process because a smaller amount of the free fatty acids will be converted into ketones.
In order to transition and remain in ketosis, aiming for about 30–50 net grams is typically the recommended amount of carbs to start with. This is considered a more moderate or flexible approach but can be less overwhelming to begin with.
Everyone wants to save money right? Well, this blog post will lay out a comprehensive plan for saving money while eating a healthy keto diet. Low carb on a budget is simple, it just takes some planning and flexibility to use whatever is on sale. Before we get too far into it I’d like to lay out the whole suite we have put together for anyone looking for more info on the specifics of this plan:
Remember that different flours act in different ways as well. For example, you would only need about half the amount of coconut flour as you would almond flour. Coconut flour is much more absorptive and generally, requires more liquid.
While sometimes referred to as a vegetable, tomatoes are pretty important to mention here. They are commonly consumed on a ketogenic diet in the form of sauces or added as a flavor enhancer in many recipes.
Hi there, you can certainly eat guavas, but as with any fruit on the keto diet, it’s important to consume in limited amounts. If you must have fruit, we recommend sticking with berries (blackberries, strawberries, cranberries, mulberries, etc.)
In general, the more “real” the food, the better it is for you. While some processed foods are acceptable, many are not. Make sure that you read through the ingredients and nutrition information to make sure that it can fit within your diet.
Here’s a nutritional list of some of the more commonly consumed vegetables on keto. Keep in mind that the weights are the same of everything listed so that it will impact the skew of the carb counts. For example, in a meal you may have 6 oz. of broccoli in the side, but you would not have 6 oz. worth of berries in the morning. You may mix 6 oz. of berries into a pudding with 4 servings.
Your body will turn your excess body fat into ketones and using ketones as the main energy source. And when your body starts burning more ketones, we call that being in a state of ketosis. That’s why a ketogenic (or keto) diet is also sometimes called the ketosis diet.
Although a standard ketogenic diet is even more restrictive in terms of carb intake, a “moderate keto diet” is another option that will very likely still be able to provide substantial weight loss results and other improvements in symptoms. Including slightly more carbs can be very useful for maintenance, allow for more flexibility, provide a higher fiber intake, and overall may feel more sustainable long term socially and psychologically.
Ketogenic diets are characterized by a reduction in carbohydrates (usually to less than 50 g/day) and a relative increase in the proportions of protein and fat.3 The knowledge regarding the metabolic effects of classic ketogenic diets originates from the pioneering work of Cahill and colleagues in the 1960s,4 but the realization of the importance of these diets from a clinical point of view can be traced back to the early 1920s when they began to be successfully used in the treatment of epilepsy.5 There even appears to be a reference to its use in the Bible in the story of the cured epileptic (New Testament, Matthew 17:14–21). Alongside the huge amount of data about the influence of correct nutrition on health status and disease prevention (encapsulated in various nutritional guidelines delivered by public health committees worldwide), there is also ample evidence to support the notion that a low-carbohydrate diet can lead to an improvement in some metabolic pathways and have beneficial health effects. To use ‘food as medicine’ is as attractive a concept as it is ancient, and in the hope of realizing this much effort has been dedicated to exploring the effects of VLCKD on human metabolism. In this review we will look at all the areas where ketogenic diets have been proposed as having potential clinical utility with a brief discussion of the evidence.
For most normal people, the amounts of fats and protein will be enough to naturally keep you satiated and naturally keep you in a calorie deficit. Though, the average American is not always normal. There’s tons of hormone, endocrine, and deficiency problems that we need to take into account.
Seeds come with many unique benefits as well. Flaxseeds, for example, are the richest dietary source of lignan precursors, while sesame seeds offer the highest amount of phytosterols of all nuts and seeds. Both lignans and phytosterols are helpful in reducing inflammation and heart disease and cancer risk.
Option 1: Caesar salad with romaine lettuce, chicken breast, bacon, and Parmesan. “Rich in protein and super filling, this is the perfect meal to round out your day,” says Dr. Axe. “Pair it with an olive oil dressing and plenty of cheese to up the fat content.”
Having tempting, unhealthy foods in your home is one of the biggest reasons for failure when starting any diet. To maximize your chances of success with the keto diet, you need to remove as many triggers as you can. This crucial step will help prevent moments of weakness from ruining all your hard work.
