Children who discontinue the diet after achieving seizure freedom have about a 20% risk of seizures returning. The length of time until recurrence is highly variable but averages two years. This risk of recurrence compares with 10% for resective surgery (where part of the brain is removed) and 30–50% for anticonvulsant therapy. Of those that have a recurrence, just over half can regain freedom from seizures either with anticonvulsants or by returning to the ketogenic diet. Recurrence is more likely if, despite seizure freedom, an electroencephalogram (EEG) shows epileptiform spikes, which indicate epileptic activity in the brain but are below the level that will cause a seizure. Recurrence is also likely if an MRI scan shows focal abnormalities (for example, as in children with tuberous sclerosis). Such children may remain on the diet longer than average, and it has been suggested that children with tuberous sclerosis who achieve seizure freedom could remain on the ketogenic diet indefinitely.
While most fruits are off limits on this low carbohydrate diet, tomatoes are an exception. This piece of produce is an excellent source of lycopene, a compound with some serious heart health benefits. In fact, a recent study published in the British Journal of Nutrition concluded that an increase in lycopene consumption is associated with a lower risk of developing cardiovascular disease.
High amounts of healthy fats (up to 80 percent of your total calories!), such as olive oil, coconut oil, grass-fed butter, palm oil, and some nuts and seeds. Fats are a critical part of every ketogenic recipe because fat is what provides energy and prevents hunger, weakness and fatigue.
Whether you prefer this veggie as a mashed potato stand-in or masquerading as rice, cauliflower is an ideal substitute for many starchy meals and snacks. With just two measly grams of sugar in an entire cup, it is safe to eat with abandon.
Protein. Try to stick with organic, pasture-raised and grass-fed meat where possible. Most meats don’t have added sugar in them, so they can be consumed in moderate quantity. Remember that too much protein on a ketogenic diet is not a good thing.
Animal proteins (meat, fish, etc.) have very little, if any, carbs. You can consume them in moderate amounts as needed to control hunger. Overall, choose fattier cuts of meat rather than leaner ones. For example, chicken thighs and legs are preferable to chicken breasts because they contain much more fat.
The high-fat diet includes moderate protein intake and very few carbs (about 75:20:5 by calorie percentage), and can help you shed pounds fast. When your body is unable to get glucose from carbs, your liver kicks in to convert fatty acids into clean-burning ketones. Running on ketones turns off inflammatory pathways, and keeps you away from the energy crashes and blood sugar spikes of a carb-fueled diet. The Bulletproof Diet uses cyclical intermittent keto as a powerful tool to fuel your brain and shed extra body fat, but you may want to try a full ketogenic diet too.
When in doubt, check the nutrition label. Focus on limiting carbs. Total carbs – fiber = net carbs. Come back to the foods list as you need it and be sure to download the free guide so you always have it handy.
Careful with snacking: One thing you have to keep in mind is that even while eating keto you can suffer from small insulin spikes. Less snacking means less of those giving you a better chance of losing weight.
It would be interesting to find out what component in avo’s you are reacting to – is it the actual avocado or chems the farmers may be using or stores are using when washing produce? There is a certain persimmon that I can’t eat, if I want to continue breathing, so I am not denying your reaction to them.

A nice pork roast, rubbed down with cumin, salt, and garlic, will give you leftovers for days, tastes amazing, and is pretty cheap. Pair that with some brussels sprouts, broccoli, or cauliflower that has been roasted in the oven until brown and delicious, and you’ve got a comfort meal, keto-style! Get the recipe and instructions
Is it ok to have low fat cheeses as long as you are eating other healthy fats from avocado, olive oil, nuts etc… Will low fat cheeses affect keto diet? How many oz of cheese can you consume per day? Lean meat is not advised on Keto is 90-10% Ok or better go to 85-15%?
There’s no real scientific reasoning/explanation behind why some people start to itch when they start keto. There’s just a handful of experiences that people have written about, and so I’m basing my answer on what I’ve read.
I initially intended to keep the net carb count around 20 a day, but it ended up working out even better than that. The 28 day average for the net carbs is 11.2g Net Carbs per day. The total carbs, on average, is 19.6g per day. Even if you’re not counting net carbs, this would be a great way to quickly get yourself into ketosis.

Option 3: “Make your own keto ‘lunchable’ with cubes of grilled chicken, a slice of nitrate-free ham, cheese cubes, pickle slices, a hard-boiled egg, a few raw grape tomatoes, raw veggies like cauliflower or broccoli, a few almonds or walnuts, guacamole, and ranch dressing,” says Stefanski. (Looking for something meat-free? Here are 29 vegetarian keto recipes for plant-based eaters.)
If you have a pork allergy and cannot eat bacon, you can get turkey bacon and turkey sausage. You can also make hamburger sausage and jerky. I prepare Ketogenic and Ketobetic meals for my clients as well as gluten free. So, such situations are commonplace for me.
The purpose of exogenous ketone supplements is to provide the body with extra ketones (energy). Ketone supplements can be a huge help when transitioning into a state of ketosis or entering a fasted state.
It’s important to also drink lots of water. Getting enough water helps keep you from feeling fatigued, is important for digestion and aids in hunger suppression. It’s also needed for detoxification. Aim to drink 10–12 eight-ounce glasses a day.

Protein intake should be between one and 1.5 grams per kilogram of your ideal body weight. To convert pounds to kilograms, divide your ideal weight by 2.2. For example, a woman who weighs 150 pounds (68 kilograms) should get about 68–102 grams of protein daily.
Other ketogenic protein sources in our keto food list include nut butters and fermented soy products, but steer clear of these options on a Bulletproof track. If you can’t get your day’s protein from animal sources, opt for whey protein concentrate (not isolate), which helps to boost glutathione production. Avoid packaged, factory-farmed or heavily processed meats, and watch out for additives or curing agents in items like bacon or sausages.
There is a third piece of the puzzle. Part of getting healthy is getting the required nutrients. Fixing insulin resistance allows you to absorb your nutrients even better, but you still need to eat well to get all the necessary nutrients.
Tweet Tweet Keeping your tastebuds entertained while following a keto diet does not have to be a struggle. Some low-carb, high-fat dieters find that they have the most success with their diet when they eat consistent meals on a regular basis and do not deviate from their plan. Others find …

Long-term use of the ketogenic diet in children increases the risk of slowed or stunted growth, bone fractures and kidney stones. The diet reduces levels of insulin-like growth factor 1, which is important for childhood growth. Like many anticonvulsant drugs, the ketogenic diet has an adverse effect on bone health. Many factors may be involved such as acidosis and suppressed growth hormone. About 1 in 20 children on the ketogenic diet will develop kidney stones (compared with one in several thousand for the general population). A class of anticonvulsants known as carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (topiramate, zonisamide) are known to increase the risk of kidney stones, but the combination of these anticonvulsants and the ketogenic diet does not appear to elevate the risk above that of the diet alone. The stones are treatable and do not justify discontinuation of the diet. Johns Hopkins Hospital now gives oral potassium citrate supplements to all ketogenic diet patients, resulting in a sevenfold decrease in the incidence of kidney stones. However, this empiric usage has not been tested in a prospective controlled trial. Kidney stone formation (nephrolithiasis) is associated with the diet for four reasons:
In the colder months, you might feel like eating higher starch carbs. You can still eat these. Just do so in moderation. Sweet potatoes, yams, peas, carrots, GMO-free corn, and other tubers contain lots of nutrition. But due to their relative high carb content, exercise prudent portion control.
Pick this nut butter over the peanut variety if you’re trying to minimize your carbohydrate intake. An equal portion of peanut butter has two extra grams of carbs and not as much healthy monounsaturated fat.
In order to transition and remain in ketosis, aiming for about 30–50 net grams is typically the recommended amount of total carbs to start with. This is considered a more moderate or flexible approach but can be less overwhelming to begin with. Once you’re more accustomed to this way of eating, you can choose to lower carbs even more if you’d like (perhaps only from time to time), down to about 20 grams of net carbs daily. This is considered the standard, “strict” amount that many keto dieters aim to adhere to for best results, but remember that everyone is a bit different.
Add bone broth to your diet, which can help restore electrolytes that are lost during ketosis. When you follow a keto diet, even if you’re drinking a lot of water, you will lose a lot of water weight and also flush essential electrolytes out of our system, including magnesium, potassium or sodium. Adding bone broth is a great way to replenish these naturally, in addition to getting other nutrients and amino acids.
Healthy ketosisTM is a state in which the body is using ketones as its primary fuel. Ketones are the byproduct of fat burning and a much cleaner fuel than sugar. Ketones are the preferred fuel of the body and brain. Running on glucose is inefficient for the body and unhealthy in numerous ways. It is just a recent way of eating for humankind.
Regarding your long-term health, avocados have been found to help improve cholesterol and triglyceride levels. One study, for example, found that an increase in avocado consumption led to a 22% decrease in “bad” LDL cholesterol and triglycerides and an 11% increase in “good” HDL cholesterol.
For this reason, MCTs and coconut oil can help decrease calorie consumption, increase energy levels, and improve brain function. In fact, the MCTs in coconut oil can even improve the quality of life and cognitive function of people with Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, epilepsy, and other neurological disorders.
“For a newbie, this plan is very easy to follow. I was afraid of failing again. I just started this plan and I am not feeling hungry. Raj thank you. I hope to be more comfortable with my keto lifestyle now.*”
1. For the chicken, heat the avocado oil over medium-high heat. Meanwhile, season the chicken thighs with oregano, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and pepper. Cook the chicken for about 5 minutes on each side, or until their internal temperature reaches 165F

This guilty pleasure may be as pleasureful for you as it is for your body. The cocoa in dark chocolate contains many flavanols that decrease blood pressure, heart disease risk, and insulin resistance.
Feel free to add sweetener and spices to this if you’re not the biggest fan of the taste. Cinnamon, stevia, vanilla extract. Whatever you’d like to make it great tasting. You can even switch up the taste each and every day so you don’t get bored!

Early studies reported high success rates: in one study in 1925, 60% of patients became seizure-free, and another 35% of patients had a 50% reduction in seizure frequency. These studies generally examined a cohort of patients recently treated by the physician (what is known as a retrospective study) and selected patients who had successfully maintained the dietary restrictions. However, these studies are difficult to compare to modern trials. One reason is that these older trials suffered from selection bias, as they excluded patients who were unable to start or maintain the diet and thereby selected from patients who would generate better results. In an attempt to control for this bias, modern study design prefers a prospective cohort (the patients in the study are chosen before therapy begins) in which the results are presented for all patients regardless of whether they started or completed the treatment (known as intent-to-treat analysis).
Avoid meat with condiments. Because, even if you’re enjoying a 4th of July barbecue with grass-fed burgers, a dollop of ketchup might be all it takes to kick you out of ketosis. (Depending on many factors, you may need to limit your total net carbs to 25-50 grams per day to stay in ketosis.) So, enhance your meats with natural spices and herbs instead.
For most people, eating less than 20g of net carbs a day will get them on track for ketosis within a matter of days. To ensure the process is sped up some you should aim for less than 15g of net carbs daily.
This week we’re getting stricter with our fasting. We had a full week of intermittent fasting and now we’re going to skip breakfast and lunch. Water is our BEST friend here! Don’t forget that you can drink coffee, tea, flavored water, and the like to get your liquids in. Keep drinking to make sure you’re not thinking about your stomach. It MIGHT start growling, just ignore it – your body will adjust with time.
Cruciferous vegetables are a saving grace for ketogenic dieters as well because they make great substitutes for higher-carb foods and stand-alone side items and snacks. For instance, cauliflower can be used to mimic rice or mashed potatoes and kale can be turned into crunchy, delicious chips.
