Don’t go cold turkey from high-carb to very low carb. Yes, you’ll have to give up pastas and bread in your sandwiches to achieve ketosis, but a few croutons or rotini in your salad, or enjoying your usual slice of pumpkin pie won’t hurt at the start.

By default, your body generates energy from carbohydrates (glucose), which are stored as glycogen in your muscle tissue and liver (5). You store enough carbs for approximately 24 hours worth of energy (5). Now, most of us easily replenish our carb stores by eating fruit, vegetables, grains, and legumes, so our carb “fuel tanks” rarely get low and we continue burning glucose for energy.
I eat relatively healthy and fairly low carb (I am already gluten free). I am interested in getting into Ketosis for the the health benefits, but am quite thin for a guy and don’t want to lose any weight. I look at the sample diet above and am pretty sure I would drop weight quickly (I consume about 2,500+ calories daily now). I eat 3 meals plus 2-3 snacks (snacks mostly of nuts (with raisins that would have to go), greek yogurt (would switch to plain), peanut butter, cheese and fruit (would need to reduce qty)). Would eating straight up butter be ok for additional calories also once I am in Ketosis?
Take a 2 – 3 cups of lettuce, crumble in some bacon and dice a medium tomato. Mix that with two or three tablespoons of mayo, and toss after adding some splashes of hot sauce. Delicious, filling, full of fiber and healthy fats, and absolutely easy. I know the mayo sounds weird as a dressing, but trust us; it’s amazing! Add in some avocado chunks to boost potassium too!
Although I wanted to get as close to the macros as I could, I was off by a little bit. The 28 day average across all days comes out to 1597 Calories – broken down into 136g Fats, 19.6g Carbs, 8.4g Fiber, 11.2g Net Carbs, and 74.9g Protein.
The best way to monitor your ketone levels is through testing, which you can do from home. When you eat a ketogenic diet, excess ketones spill over into several areas of the body. This allows you to measure your ketone levels in various ways:
It’s important to also drink lots of water. Getting enough water helps keep you from feeling fatigued, is important for digestion and aids in hunger suppression. It’s also needed for detoxification. Aim to drink 10–12 eight-ounce glasses a day.
There are four general styles of the ketogenic diet. They are slight variations of each other, but the purpose of each is to induce ketosis and accommodate other physiological and lifestyle goals. The four most common versions of the ketogenic diet are:
On average people will lose 1-2 lbs. a week, but that doesn’t mean the scale will drop consistently. Take measurements as well as tracking your weight via scale, as often there can be changes in size but no change on the scale. If you’re still experiencing problems after 4-5 weeks, start looking into your dietary choices.
You can stay on the Keto diet indefinitely, do it as a weight-loss plan over a single short period or cycle in and out. Fat-rich foods are key, protein is moderate and carbs are the bad guys. Educating yourself about carbs and getting familiar with good fats is the first step, Vogel says.
This 21-days of meal planning is created and permitted to publish by our friend Vicky and Rami, founders of Tasteaholics! They have been following the ketogenic diet for many years both personally and professionally. They’ve put together this plan to help you succeed.
I get many questions about intermittent fasting, the health benefits, the weight loss benefits, and the like. People normally use intermittent fasting for both the energy and mental clarity it can offer. But it’s not just good for that. It can offer breakthroughs of plateaus and even benefits in nutrient uptake in exercise. We go more in depth to intermittent fasting in Week 3 and 4, so keep your eyes peeled!
Its simple, eat this; lose weight. I feel like I’ve finally amassed enough recipes to create several simple keto meal plans. AKA you print out a couple of recipes, hit the store, and you can know you’ll be doing keto right. If you’re not familiar with keto, its a low carb, high fat, medium protein diet designed to put your body into ketosis. Once in ketosis, your body burns fat instead of sugar and you’ll see accelerated weight loss as a result. The ideal ratio of fat to protein to carbs is 65% / 30% / 5% and you also want to keep your maximum net carbs at less than 20g a day. Net carbs = carbs – fiber.
5. Combine the watermelon, spinach, and cucumber in a large bowl. Whisk the mint, lime zest and juice, and avocado oil together. Pour it over the watermelon, spinach, and cucumber, and toss together. Sprinkle with the chili powder and salt. Enjoy chilled, alongside the flank steak and plantains
Before jumping in, Vogel advises, experiment with low-carb veggies in the grocery store’s natural produce section, find sources of grass-fed meat and learn about hidden sources of sugar, like the coleslaw at your local eatery. Don’t assume sugar cravings will disappear right away, Vogel warns – instead, stock up on Keto-friendly desserts like dark chocolate with nut butter.
Dieters use a number of signs to know they’re in ketosis, some more subjective than others. Simple DIY urine or blood test results, bad or fruity breath, reduced hunger, sharper mental focus, changes in exercise performance, and weight loss can all indicate ketosis.
Never throw away bacon fat. Ever! This thing is the coolest invention. It’s a little ceramic container that has a built-in filter that stores your bacon grease. You simply pour the grease into it when you’re done frying some bacon and its ready to spoon back into the pan next time you’re frying some veggies!
^ Ketogenic “eggnog” is used during induction and is a drink with the required ketogenic ratio. For example, a 4:1 ratio eggnog would contain 60 g of 36% heavy whipping cream, 25 g pasteurised raw egg, saccharin and vanilla flavour. This contains 245 kcal (1,025 kJ), 4 g protein, 2 g carbohydrate and 24 g fat (24:6 = 4:1). The eggnog may also be cooked to make a custard, or frozen to make ice cream.
Many people choose this dairy-free keto diet meal plan because they have dairy intolerance. Another reason is because they are having weight loss stalls and a dairy-free meal plan can help them get over the stalls. If your current meal plan is not working for you, maybe it’s time to switch to a different meal plan to get different results.

You can measure if you’re in ketosis via urine or blood strips, though it’s not really worth it. The urine strips are considered pretty inaccurate (they more answer the question “Am I in ketosis?”), and the blood strips are expensive (up to $5 per strip). The possible beneficial effects of ketogenic diets on mitochondrial activity described above has also been proposed to explain the improved scores on a standard gravity scale of Parkinson’ disease exhibited by some patients.91 In addition, the typical mitochondrial respiratory chain damage that occurs in animal models of Parkinson’s disease was reduced by a ketogenic diet;89 however, the real utility of this diet remains largely speculative and uncertain.

In contrast, multivitamins aren’t a good solution as they are synthetic and lack a lot of nutrients like polyphenols, antioxidants, and fiber that green powders and whole food sources provide. And the lack of fats and enzymes make the nutrients they do contain very difficult to process properly. Just because you’re putting something in your body doesn’t mean your body can use it!
